about

Beauty is Incomplete

"To be premature is perfect"
– Oscar Wilde

Donny Alger, Taylor Price, Greg Dopko, Lee de las Casas, and I were the original members of Teenager. We weren’t even teenagers, most of us were well into our twenties and one member was in his thirties. We were a false start. It was the summer of 1998. Teenager was a band formed solely to host an Open Mic Night on Sundays at Spirits Tavern in Auburn, New York during the month of July. The five of us started rehearsing in May. Our intent was simple, to write and play original Rock-n-Roll. We saw it as a vocation. The spirit of that summer and the spurt of creativity produced over forty classic songs that to this day remains as relevant as Rock-n-Roll itself. Whatever that meant then and for what it is worth now, we placed great value in what we made. The primary documents that remain are a few dozen pages of lyrics, three lo-fi band photographs, VHS tapes, unfinished 4-track recordings, a handmade pin, and a place mat with the words “TURN DOWN!” scrawled on it. We were loud, we were lost, a total mess that lived up to our name… and we were short-lived.

Teenager started to record an album on 4-track that August, but we imploded after a wreckless gig. There was never any formal break up – we just stopped playing together as a band. Lee had the recordings on his Tascam 4-track, which he used to overdub guitars over the next few years. Sometimes he invited Donny and me to record vocals. Even though Teenager ended, these songs haunted me for years and I saw it as a mission to someday re-record the songs in a decent studio and release them for the world to hear. In 2007, Teenager reformed with Donny, Taylor, and me being joined by Theresa Walsh and Beth Beer. This incarnation recorded an album called Entitled. Several of the songs written in the summer of 1998 were finally recorded in a way that captured the spirit of the original band. "Entitled" received several accolades including one of the10 best albums of 2007 by music critic Mark Bialczak and a positive review from Jack Rabid.

Twenty years later in June 2018, I contacted Lee to compile the original unfinished 4-track recordings from 1998, along with some of his guitar overdubs and his original guitar vignettes. These recordings are as unruly, unpolished and premature as we were. But in these early recordings you can hear our quintessence. The spirit that guided us that summer is wholly intact in these songs. Now we give you the original Teenager Unentitled.
